When St. Cuthbert’s College embarked on a wireless notebook programme, one of the main challenges facing staff was to provide engaging multimedia learning activities. ClickView has revolutionised the way video, audio and images are stored and used within the College.

Whether it’s searching the ClickView Digital Video Library to find material for a research assignment, viewing video exemplars for assessments, archiving school events, or using podcasts to support learning, ClickView provides a complete solution.

Teachers can email the College Library to arrange for a programme to be recorded, and it’s added to the ClickView Digital Library the next day, saving staff a lot of messing around with video recorders. Similarly, we are beginning to import Learning Objects and software training videos into our ClickView Library to increase the range of resources available.

ClickView is integrated with the College’s Intranet and library catalogue using WebStart links, so students simply click on a link to go directly to a video and it begins playing. Students are also using the Export to PowerPoint function to include video content into presentations. They can also use School Bag to complete video-based homework.

Mark Osborne - Director of Library Services

Our students have had a very positive response to ClickView. Visual format is second nature to students so they have taken very easily to ClickView. The biggest benefit is the ability of the students to work at their own pace and they are now able to manage the whole visual process themselves. (i.e. if they have missed something they can go back over the chapters or if they need to stop the video and make notes they can do so without disrupting the class).

There is also a very real benefit for students to be able to pack up the video and worksheets, etc into School Bag and take it home to work on.

One of the main advantages of ClickView is that it is user-friendly. Use of ClickView has meant that videos are readily available in a multiple of locations meaning a larger number of teachers/students are able to access the videos. Staff do not have to physically search the video collection. There are also space saving advantages because there is no need to store as many DVDs/Videos.

Nagle library actively copies programmes and adds them to ClickView. The programme is thus available within a short time of the taping. An alerting service ensures that ClickView is well advertised.

The setup was reasonably easy by our IT Department. Chris Marley was very approachable and we have had great in-house IT support. Given the distance, (Geraldton) the whole experience has been very positive. Any problems were always addressed promptly.

Because the students are managing the ClickView videos by themselves, this allows the teacher to be available for more one-on-one facilitating. Also very useful for relief lessons as worksheets, instructions, etc can be left attached to the relevant video and students can work at their own pace.

ClickView has expanded students’ learning giving them greater learning opportunities. The ease of access, multiple retrieval points, quality of programmes, capacity to add in-house taping, ability of students to work at their own pace and release of teachers to facilitate, all enhance Nagle’s education structure.

Clickview has been an excellent investment in order for our school to deliver digital content. With Clickview being available on every student and staff member’s computer, content can be viewed as a whole class, individually, or for students to access at a later date if they have been absent or need clarification. The accompanying resource notes and lessons plans are valuable and help to provide a rich learning experience. The Clickview interface is user friendly and the installation of new content is straightforward. The facility for schools to add Learning Objects, worksheets, graphics, and captured television programs provides an excellent digital storage facility.

The implementation of Clickview within the school has been a long process primarily due to the inherent difficulty in changing the habits of entrenched staff. However, once staff realise the benefits that Clickview offers, the word quickly gets out and demand for viewing areas increases very quickly. Staff habits are hard to break and the mass viewing technique is still preferred to students viewing Clickview content on individual computers working on their own. However, this technique does allow for group interaction when discussing the video content being viewed. Clickview has revolutionised the way we deliver and record video content in the school. Now that the Clickview library is as large and diverse as it is, means that few gaps exist in most teaching and learning areas.

For cutting edge content, the implementation of the Clickview 24/7 server has been quite amazing. This invaluable tool is worth its weight in gold as it has allowed our staff to have viewed a pertinent show on free to air TV and then request it to be recorded for latter use in the classroom. Most staff now find that they don’t miss those important TV shows that will stimulate discussion in the classroom with their up to date relevant content. Clickview 24/7 works beautifully out of the box, with up to 6 digital channels being recorded constantly; missing a recording is a thing of the past. A web interface for requesting a recording to be placed in the Clickview Library is the only addition that I would like to implement.

In terms of cost to the school, Clickview actually saves money in the long term, as we now have all of the Video Education Australia, Classroom Video and Australian Children’s Television Foundation videos available to staff and students. In the past, an audit revealed the school was in fact spending more per year on physical videos being purchased by individual faculties.

Clickview has been the catalyst to stimulate the whole schools move to a new model of teaching and learning based on eLearning philosophies. Once staff found a eLearning tool that they could successfully teach with it opened their eyes up to more possibilities. Staff are now using Learning Management Systems (Moodle) to deliver courses to students both at school and at home and guess what one of the items they deliver with it is; Clickview videos via a URL link.

Before ClickView, use of video was almost a filler to be used at the end of term. Rarely did it seem to be consciously incorporated into a lesson plan. I suspect this was due to the need to find the video, book a TV/VCR, move it to the room and find "where we got up to", all whilst controlling the students at the same time.

With ClickView, the ability to quickly prepare a lesson incorporating video and make specific changes to the relevant worksheet, has meant that many more teachers are reviving the use of video in their lessons.

Now we find faculties like Science and Humanities taking students to computer labs or using workstations/projectors to show relevant videos after having easily modified the worksheet to suit their exact topic.

From a company perspective the support from ClickView has been very helpful, and the online knowledge base easy to understand and comprehensive. Responses to queries have been prompt and to the point.

Col Thompson – Head of Information Technology

Prior to our subscription to ClickView, we had to make multiple purchases of commercially produced videos/DVDs and often had to make multiple copies of programs recorded off free-to-air and Foxtel.

We have found that ClickView has made the use of video programs by staff and students easier and much more accessible. Most of our teachers like to use ClickView during classes where students can watch programs on separate computers and fill in a worksheet at their own pace. Some teachers like the freedom of watching programs in the classrooms whenever they choose to, instead of having to book a day in advance through the library. We get requests for programs to be added onto ClickView on a daily basis now!

Because ClickView is so user friendly, we have often found that we don’t need to train staff how to use it. Students have also naturally worked out how to use it without any training, and we have been pleasantly surprised at how many watch documentaries in their own time.

ClickView has been a very popular innovation at St Andrews with its usage increasing every day. As a company we have found ClickView to be fast and responsive in support of any problems encountered.

  The Library Staff

In mid 2004 we found ClickView. Our first impressions were extremely favourable and we soon became the first NSW State school to undertake a large scale installation of the system. ClickView software engineers worked closely with our staff, and the feedback provided opportunities to refine the recording process.

Today our school enjoys access to a sophisticated and reliable ClickView installation. Over 1500 videos are available in the ClickView library, nearly 600 of which are free to air recordings. The ClickView client is installed on over 200 computers - both Mac and Windows. Staff can present whole group viewings in over 20 locations and our recording and editing process is flexible, fast and reliable.

With the aid of informative and relevant professional learning sessions provided by ClickView to our staff, we now look forward to a future where the digital media resources available through ClickView become an increasingly integral part of our teaching and learning at St Ives High School.

  Phil Roberts - Deputy Principal

While St Stephen’s deployment of ClickView is still in its infancy, already, teaching staff are enthusiastic about its capabilities and its influence on learning; one staff member describing it as “being the best thing he’s seen and used in a long time”.

As with any new implementation of technology, there are some teachers who consider their skills unequal to the task of learning new methodologies. Without exception, we have found teachers, given one, or at the most, two training sessions, are expert and enthusiastic users of ClickView.

In terms of managing the system, our audio-visual staff report a shallow learning curve and, are very pleased to be accosted by excited teaching staff seeing possibilities and wanting to use the system. Nothing is more rewarding to Administration and ICT Support than seeing staff using, with enthusiasm, the facility and it is both affirming to us that it has been an investment of funds and energy well-spent.
